Hello,

For the past three seasons, evergreen oaks that I have in my garden are dying off one after the other. I’ve been observing survivors, and the one that’s currently worse off is attacked by insects that look like little white larvae.

I’d like to know if there’s anything I can spray on these oak trees to get rid of these little maggots.

Pictures below show the galleries on one of the tree trunks. Ants have also moved in.

Thanks already for any good tips you might suggest.

Good morning,

Where do you live? I haven’t yet ever seen such a disease on evergreen oak.

Have you contacted your local agriculture extension office? Sometimes the people there are familiar with local phenomenon, like diseases and recently identified pests.

If not, were you able to take pictures of the larva you’re talking about? It would help!

Hi, thanks for your answer. I’m in France, near Aix. No agriculture extension office here.

It seems a few other persons have the same problem, from my searches on the net. Here is a picture of one of the larvae we were able to catch.

Hmmm thanks for the pictures, but it’s hard to make something of them…

It looks like some sort of woodlouse, but I’d be surprised if that’s what is causing your problem.

More probably they’re just taking advantage of a weakened tree to feed on it.

Has the tree suffered from anything in the past months? Drought? Fungus?

I would really recommend checking with some kind of local agency. For sure there’s something related to forestry or plant disease containment.

Hello again,

In the end I got a little more information by someone who had a similar problem. So this is what I’ve done:

• sprayed lots of bordeaux mix on all the trees that I had left
• kept cutting out infected branches and protected with pruning paste
• and I also sprayed a product against woodlice

So normally it should control the disease!
