My complex is digging a trench 5 ft from the trunk of the eucalyptus tree to put  gas pipe.  Will cutting the roots 5 ft from trunk kill the tree?

    Hi,

    welcome-to-our-forum

no it shouldn’t kill the tree. It does make it more vulnerable to

    • tipping over in case of strong winds – is it exposed to wind that would make it tip? That would concern wind coming from the side the gas pipe is on.
    • It might lead to sagging and light wilting of leaves: after all, it’ll be losing some of its root system and it takes time to build that up.

If you it’s something you do regularly, have it pruned or trimmed at the same time: you’ll reduce the load so having less roots won’t have an impact.
