I have what I assumed was a datura plant. I live in middle Tennessee. It has drooping flowers and spiny seedpods, but, when I read the descriptions of the two plants it does not fit. My plant has very spiny seedpods, but it has drooping, not upright flowers. It makes semi woody stems and dies back in winter and comes back in Spring and grows pretty tall. Botanic descriptions say Brugmansia has drooping flowers and smooth seed pods a d gets woody. Datura is described as having upright flowers and spiny seed pods and having green stems. I am confused. Any clarification?

Hi Goatlady! that does sound confusing – I think you’ll have to share pictures of your identity-troubled plant! You can add lots rather easily to an album on your profile, or also upload them here to the conversation. Some varieties aren’t as markedly defined as “definitely drooping” or “absolutely upright”. Jimsonweed is actually a type of datura with spiny seed pods and flowers that are mostly upright, perhaps that’s what it is.
