Moving a Crepe Myrtle to a pot

    Help Please

    My son has to move a crepe myrtle from soil in the ground to a permanent pot as he is moving house. His question is around the use of current ground soil versus potting mix.

    Should he pull the plant out once dormant, completely wash all the dirt off the roots and try and repot it? or

    Should he cut a smaller root ball and move that with dirt attached and then backfill with potting mix.

    Hello,

    If your son is intending to re-plant the crepe myrtle, it would be sensible to identify a suitable new location BEFORE he transplants it; moving it from the ground to a pot and then to the ground again may be ill-advised.

    After some research, we found this:

    ‘Crepe myrtle transplanting starts with selecting a new location for the tree. Think about its requirements then find the spot that works best. You’ll need a sunny location for the best flowering, plus some elbow room for the tree.’
