    Hi there

We have 7 lovely Portuguese Laurel standard trees used for screening purposes. How do i encourage new growth further down the truck. I know that if you cut a small nic in an apple tree truck new growth appears. Can I do the same with Laural standard trees?

    thank you for your time

    Steve.

Well hello Stephen – yes that will certainly work! It’ll help to prune the shrubs a bit to cut off as many of the other tips as you can: this will set the entire tree in “branching out mode”.

Though a big difference with apple is that usually apple is pruned to be wide open and nearly see-through so the trunk gets sunlight at some point during the day. The risk with your portugal laurel is that the portion of the trunk you want to sprout won’t get enough sun to trigger the branching you need. But trying it out certainly won’t kill the tree so go ahead and give it a shot.

    Loving the season!
