Thuja Occidentalis white cedar

    Hi Gaspard, I want to plant a thuja tree to use the leaves for making thuja cream and was wondering if you could let me know which of the Thuja varieties would be best for this purpose and also not be too tall. Hedge size is fine but I would prefer a tree or bush that doesn’t require regular trimming, although I will be doing some of that. Thanks, Nola

    Time has flown and it’s been a while since I noted I wanted to answer you, Nola! Thanks for your patience…

    There are quite a few dwarf varieties. That’s really what you should look for, ‘dwarf thuja’. I find the Tater tot cute, but there’s also the ‘teddy’. Those stay really small and even grow in pots.

    From a chemical point of view, I think all thuja varieties would suit your purpose. The compounds are basic components of the species, so all the varieties will have them.
