I had been taught to water late afternoon to keep water penetrate well in the soil. Recently I’ve learned it’s better to water in the morning. Anybody has the logical explanation for this?

I do it -along with mulching year around- because early morning watering prevents excessive evaporation of the water later in the day (due to sun and heat), which can wa$te large amounts of water/money, and foliage has plenty of time to dry before the evening, preventing fungal and bacterial diseases from developing.

    I’ve heard the opposite.

The most suitable time to water outdoor plants is before the heat of the day, when the soil is not too dry. In this time the water has more chances to seep down to the roots,  plants will get much moisture before evaporating.

@Susanarscott That makes sense. True that when the dirt is really dusty it takes longer for water to drain in, kind of like a dry kitchen sponge! Sold!
