I have several senecio cylindricus in my garden that are growing profusely and look pretty healthy overall. I was doing some clean up and noticed some leaves at the top part of the plant are curling! Why is this? Is it diseased?

Hi again @Evelieb, I love your succulent questions… really interesting case. I can see scarring on the twisted leaves, might that be related to the twirling? Are the nearby stems also affected or is it only that one?

I’m not sure what the scarring is. Perhaps it’s from months ago when I sprayed soapy water on them to treat mealybugs (I made another post about that, which you left advice for me on😁) The curling seems to be on new growth

But this is the only plant that has the curled leaves, and i have many of these plants in the garden. Im hoping it’s not a disease that’s going to spread to the other plants.

hmmm. If you sprayed soapy water on other plants and this is the only one, that isn’t the cause then. Maybe it’s challenged by overwatering? Does it rest at a lower level than other plants, perhaps it’s worth digging it out a bit and resting it atop a mound to make sure drainage is perfect. Sometimes even well-prepared soil with gravel and stuff clogs up after a while, especially if the original soil below is heavy.

I had that in our vegetable bed, we had thick mulch, as in almost a foot, which in time settled to a layer 4 inches thick. Potatoes were growing there and we realized they were only growing in the mulch layer and hadn’t penetrated the heavier original soil underneath. A few plants got sickly in a spot where the ground dipped down a bit and the mulch was close to rotting in that area.
