Young Nectarine tree – planted last year

This 5′ tall nectarine tree seems to be acclimating well here in Moreno Valley, CA. This is my first experience. In the past two weeks, many green leaves have sprung up at ground level around the trunk. My inclination is to cut them off. However, before I do that, I need to know it that’s the right thing to do. The tree’s branches are budding nicely. Thanks, CM
Ah nectarine does this very easily – it what’s called a decurrent branching habit, the opposite of apical dominance. Basically this means it is more prone to launch branches lower down the trunk than at the tip of the tree. For nectarine it means you have to prune these off so that more growth goes to the branches you actually want to grow larger. We have a nectarine seedling starting up, not as big as yours, but it’s already showing signs of this. Make sure you provide enough water without drowning it, especially at the start, since this behavior increases when growth spurts are start-and-go.
I was about 95% sure about your advice to prune these little guys at the ground level, but I had to hear it from someone with nectarine knowledge.
